Tree Topping in Orlando: Why It’s Harmful to Your Trees (And What to Do Instead)

tree topping orlando example improper pruning
Example of improper pruning (topping). Weak regrowth and higher storm risk over time.

If you’re considering tree topping in Orlando, read this first. As an ISA Certified Arborist serving Central Florida, I’ve been getting this request more and more — and homeowners are often surprised to learn topping can increase storm risk, invite decay, and shorten a tree’s life.

In this guide you’ll learn what tree topping is, why it’s harmful, safer alternatives, and how to spot a company recommending the wrong work.

Arborist insight: A topped tree often becomes a more expensive tree — more maintenance, more decay risk, and a higher chance of removal sooner than expected.

At a glance

Key Takeaways

  • Topping removes too much canopy (food production) and stresses the tree.
  • Regrowth after topping is weakly attached and more likely to fail in storms.
  • Large topping cuts increase decay risk and weaken structure long-term.
  • Proper crown reduction and structural pruning are safer alternatives.

Definition

What Is Tree Topping?

Tree topping is cutting the main leader or large limbs back to stubs or random points. It is not the same as professional pruning or proper crown reduction.

Rule of thumb: If large limbs are cut to blunt stubs instead of being reduced back to a strong lateral branch, that’s topping.

What changes over time

What Homeowners See vs What Actually Happens

Right After Topping

  • The tree looks smaller immediately
  • It feels like storm risk is reduced
  • More sunlight opens up

3–10 Years Later

  • Weak, storm-prone regrowth
  • Decay entering large wounds
  • More frequent (and costly) maintenance
  • Higher chance of early removal

Why topping backfires

Why Tree Topping in Orlando Is Harmful

1) Starvation: You Removed the Food Factory

Removing a large portion of the canopy forces the tree into stress mode and makes it more vulnerable to pests and disease.

2) Sunburn: Bark Gets Exposed to Florida Sun

Sudden canopy loss exposes bark to intense Central Florida sunlight, leading to cracking and stress injuries.

3) Weak Regrowth

Epicormic sprouts grow quickly but attach poorly. As they gain weight, they are more likely to fail in storms.

4) Decay

Large topping cuts are difficult for trees to compartmentalize. Over time, decay can weaken structure internally.

Safer alternatives

What to Do Instead of Tree Topping

  • Structural pruning to remove dead, rubbing, crossing, and poorly attached branches
  • Proper crown reduction (cuts back to suitable lateral branches — not stubs)
  • Professional risk assessment from an ISA Certified Arborist
  • In some cases, tree removal may be safer than improper pruning

Orlando Tree Topping FAQ

Does tree topping make a tree safer?
No. Topping often produces weak regrowth and can increase failure risk in storms over time.
Is tree topping recommended by ISA Certified Arborists?
Most ISA Certified Arborists discourage topping because it harms tree health and structure.
What is the correct way to reduce a tree’s height?
Proper crown reduction cuts back to suitable lateral branches while preserving natural form and strength.
Can a topped tree recover?
Some trees survive, but many develop decay, weak structure, and require more frequent maintenance or removal.
