Tree topping, also called “heading” or “hat-racking,” is the practice of cutting back large branches or the entire top of a tree to reduce its height. While it might seem like a quick fix for overgrown trees or storm prevention, topping is one of the most harmful pruning practices for the long-term health and safety of your trees.
