Partner with us →How Our Grapple Saw Crane Works
Our Fassi 390 is a truck-mounted crane equipped with a grapple saw, which is why many people call it a grapple saw truck. The crane’s boom carries a grapple and a saw head, so the operator can work through a tree in controlled sections:
- Hold: the grapple grips a section of the tree before it is cut.
- Cut: the saw head makes the cut while the section is held.
- Lower: the crane sets the piece down in a planned landing zone.
Everything the crane does, including what it can reach and lift, depends on the crane’s configuration, the manufacturer’s load chart and operating limits, and site conditions, so we confirm the approach for every job before it is scheduled. Depending on site conditions, this equipment can reduce the need for climbing and help limit disturbance to the surrounding property.

When a Job Needs a Larger Crane
Kevin’s Tree Service owns and operates the Fassi 390 grapple saw crane featured on this page, and it handles many specialized removals. Some trees need more reach or lifting capacity than it is built for. For those projects, we hire a larger crane from an outside crane company when that is the appropriate approach, and plan the removal around it with our crew and ISA Certified Arborist oversight on the job.
- Planned around the tree and the site: crane size, setup location, and landing zones are chosen for the specific removal
- Subject to availability and limits: larger-crane work depends on the crane company’s availability, the crane’s configuration and load chart, permits where required, and site conditions
- Included in your estimate: if a larger crane is the right approach, it is quoted as part of the job after we review the site

How Our Crane Helps With Challenging Trees
Some trees are hard to take down safely by climbing alone: dead or declining trees, large trees leaning toward the house, or trees with little room to drop wood. Our crane can make many of these jobs more controlled: it holds each section of the tree, cuts it, and sets it down where it belongs instead of dropping wood near your home.
- Challenging removals, including trees near homes, fences, pools, and other obstacles
- Large tree sections held and lowered by the crane instead of being dropped
- Larger cranes when the job calls for it, hired from an outside crane company for removals beyond our grapple saw crane’s limits
- Reduced need for climbing in appropriate situations, such as dead or unsound trees
- Controlled cutting and lowering where there is little room to work
- Experienced KTS operators running our own crane, not a subcontracted machine
Not every tree is a crane job. Truck access, setup space, ground conditions, overhead lines, and the crane’s operating limits all matter, and when climbing, an aerial lift, or our standard tree removal approach is the better option, we’ll tell you.

Protecting the Property Around the Tree
Every crane job is planned under the KTS Property Shield™ Standard. We check where the crane truck will set up, protect driveways and turf with tarps and ground mats, and plan landing zones so wood comes down away from roofs, fences, and landscaping.
- Setup and access reviewed before the job is scheduled
- Ground protection where the crane truck and wood will sit
- Full cleanup and debris haul-away when the work is done
